Rent a Car for Maximum Freedom
Sicily is best explored by car. Public transport is limited outside major cities. Book early for better rates, and remember to drive on the right side!
Respect Local Customs
Sicilians take great pride in their culture. Dress modestly when visiting churches, and always greet with "Buongiorno" or "Buonasera".
Dining Times Are Different
Lunch is typically 1-3 PM, dinner starts around 8 PM. Many restaurants close between 3-7 PM. Sunday lunches are family time - book ahead!
Cash is Still King
Many small restaurants and shops prefer cash. ATMs are widely available, but notify your bank before traveling to avoid card blocks.
Sicily is Generally Safe
Despite stereotypes, Sicily is very safe for tourists. Use normal precautions in crowded areas and avoid leaving valuables in cars.
Pack for the Weather
Summers are hot and dry (pack sunscreen!). Spring and fall are ideal. Winter can be rainy. Always pack comfortable walking shoes.
Gas Stations Close Early
Many gas stations close at 7 PM and on Sundays. Fill up regularly and keep some cash - not all accept cards.
Embrace the Siesta
Many shops close 1-4 PM for riposo (siesta). Plan accordingly and enjoy a leisurely lunch instead of rushing around.
